Boiga dendrophila levitoni Gaulke, Demegillo & Vogel 2005
Boiga dendrophila levitoni was described from Panay Island, which
belongs to the West-Visayan-Faunalregion in the center of the
Philippines. This subspecies of the Mangrove Cat Snake is
distinguished from all other known subspecies by the large number of
light transverse bands and their patterning. There were only two
specimens known to us, but American scientists found more recently.
Due to this fact the photos here are of limited quality. They show
the holotype , killed and brought by natives.
We named
the snake in honour of Alan E. Leviton.
It
might be easy to keep this snake in captivity; however until now no
specimens were imported and as the export from the Philippines is
illegal I do not expect specimens in private hand in the near future.
This specimen seems to be rare. Due its limited distribution and the
progressing destroying of its habitat it should be especially
protected.
