Macrocalamus schulzi Vogel & David, 1999
A small secretive terrestrial species with a total length of about 40
cm. It is only known from Cameron Highlands, West-Malaysia. Until its
description, this species was regarded as the adult form of
Macrocalamus lateralis. We called this species schulzi
in honour of Klaus-Dieter Schulz for his major contribution to the
knowledge of the snake fauna of Southeast Asia, especially of the genus
Elaphe. This species will hardly be kept in captivity due to its
secretive life and its inconspicuous colours. In nature most probably
lizards are the main source of food. Little is known about the biology due to fact that
it was normally confused with M. lateralis, a species living in
the same area. Both species differ in their biology.
