Dendrelaphis kopsteini Vogel & de Rooijen 2007
A very beautiful snake of the genus Dendrelaphis with a total length up to about
1,40m. It is found in South Thailand, Western- Malaysia Singapore and the island
of Sumatra. It was often misidentified as D. cyanochloris or D. formosus . It can
be easily told apart by its red colouration behind the head. The other two
species are totally blue between the scales. More about the differences here.
The snake was named in honour of Felix Kopstein (1893-1939), an Austrian
physician and naturalist. He lived for several years in Indonesia and
contributed a lot to the snake fauna of that region. Especially two of his
articles are excellent. About the egg laying habits and about the sexual
dimorphism of Malayan snakes.
At the moment Dendrelaphis kopsteini is imported
from time to time. It is not easy to keep in captivity and feeds mostly on
lizards. Due to the misidentiicatios in the past, little is known about the
biology
